ABOUT THE COURSE

As a social science, public policy is based on the principles of economics, sociology, law, and other established academic disciplines.However, unlike these subjects, public policy studies are oriented towards concrete solutions to practical problems.We do not study public policy to grapple with abstract theoretical issues. Instead, we use theory and evidence to design,implement and evaluate policies to improve living conditions for the citizens of our country and the world.

The one week course at MS TCDC will equip students with skills that they need to operate as effective public sector leaders and managers.Analyze public policies and use identified gaps to advocate for policy reforms, Design and carry out scientific research studies that can inform evidence based policy analysis, Utilize communication skills more strategically ,Communicating Policy Research in a Politically Sensitive Political Terrain.

Course Objectives

To facilitate knowledge sharing leading to the understanding of the interaction between government and governance; politics and economics; and how these relate with public policy.

To transmit knowledge and skills for policy analysis, advocacy and research as well as strategically communicating findings to policy makers in a politically sensitive terrain.

Familiarize participants with the basic principles and methods of research, developing research hypotheses and action plans for policy research.

Understanding Government and Governance

Understanding Advocacy

Public Policy: Its definition, policy cycle

Policy analysis, policy work in constrained political space,

Political economy of policy work.

Research Approaches and Types: Theory and practice

Learning outcomes

Participants to acquire skills and knowledge on how to:

Analyze public policies and use identified gaps to advocate for policy reforms

Design and carry out scientific research studies that can inform evidence based policy analysis

Utilize communication skills more strategically

Communicating Policy Research in a Politically Sensitive Political Terrain **
