Course Objectives:

You will undertake a comparative analysis of approaches to city planning and governance worldwide and apply the African context to interrogate the popular narrative that “Urban living can provide a pathway to a better life” and be able to make own conclusions on whether that’s the case (or not) for many people around the world.

Course Content:

  • Integrated City Planning & design - how cities plan for long term goals
  • Gender-based city safety and security, violence, crime, conflict and fragility
  • Migration, urban poverty, unemployment, informal sector and informal settlements
  • Gender-based city safety and security, violence, crime, conflict and fragility
  • Cities and gender-based access to essential social services: transport, housing
  • City economic competitiveness: the role of the private sector in inclusive growth
  • Cities and climate change - challenges and responses for green sustainable cities
  • Characteristics and indicators of good urban governance (global best practices)
  • Methods and tools for monitoring and measuring good urban governance
  • Avenues for international (north-south and south-south) cooperation
  • Strategies for inclusivity, citizen participation and consultation

Public and CSO practitioners working in urban planning and city developments.
